Marco Wyss
Scientific Area: International Studies

Marco Wyss is Professor of International History and Security and the Director of the Centre for War and Diplomacy at Lancaster University; a Research Fellow at the Department of Military History, Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University; and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London. Before coming to Lancaster, he worked as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Chichester, and a Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies, ETH Zurich. He also was a Senior Humboldt Fellow at the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz, a Senior Researcher at the University of Lausanne and a Research Fellow at the University of the Free State, and held visiting professorships at Sciences Po Lille and Sciences Po Aix. Marco holds an MA in History and Philosophy from the University of Neuchâtel, and an MA in International History from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and gained his PhD in Politics and International Relations, as well as in History, from the Universities of Nottingham and Neuchâtel.

João Teixeira Lopes has a degree in Sociology from the University of Porto (1992) Master in social sciences from the University of Lisbon (1995) with the Dissertation Sad schools – A Study on Cultural Student Practices in the Urban School Space (Porto, Edições Afrontamento, 1997). PhD in Sociology of Culture and Education (1999) with the Dissertation (The City and Culture – A Study on Urban Cultural Practices (Porto, Edições Afrontamento, 2000). Effective member of the Observatory of Cultural Activities between 1996 and 1998. He integrated the coordinating team for the Report on National Cultural Policies (1985-95) presented in 1998 to the Council of Europe (Lisbon, Cultural Policies in Portugal, Observatory of Cultural Activities, 1998) for the area of involvement of the population. He was member of the initial team that drafted the candidacy project submitted to the Council of Europe. He represented the Bloco de Esquerda as deputy to the Assembly of the Republic (2002-2006). Scientific Coordinator of the Institute of Sociology at FLUP between 2002 and February 2010. Director of Revista Sociologia between 2009 and February 2013. He has 23 books published (alone or in co-authorship) in the fields of sociology of culture, city, youth and education, as well as museology and territorial studies. Awarded on May 29, 2014 with the “Chevalier des Palmes Académiques” award by the French Government. He is president of the Portuguese Association of Sociology. He chaired the Department of Sociology at FLUP between 2011 and February 2019. Since May 2020, he coordinates again the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto.

Mercedes Alcañiz Moscardó is a Doctor in Political Science and Sociology and a Professor of Sociology at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón, Spain where she is also Director of the Unitat d’Igualtat de la Universitat (University Equality Unit) and Coordinator of the research group DESiRES – Sociology and Social Research Methodologies: Inequalities and Resistance. Her main research topics are focused on Social Changes and Gender Studies. She has conducted various research projects and published articles in Spanish and foreign journals on different aspects related to women’s social reality, such as the reconciliation of work and family life, technology, peace and development, generational changes and inequality. She has also given lectures and participated in courses at universities in Portugal, Mexico, Chile, Cuba and Costa Rica. Currently, she is the president of the Gender Sociology Research Committee in the Spanish Federation of Sociology (FES).

Full Professor in Health Communication and Health Promotion at Maastricht University (School for Public Health and Primary Care, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences) and endowed chair for the Dutch Cancer Society on Cancer Prevention and Health Promotion. His main areas of interest are understanding health behaviour in individuals and groups, developing effective interventions, and implementation of evidence-based interventions.Most of his work focuses on primary prevention and his health behavior topics include a wide array, such as smoking, alcohol, physical activity, nutrition, HIV/Aids, lifestyles, participation in screening programs, diabetes II, COPD. Besides his work with public health policies boards, he is involved with several international research collaborations in Europe (e.g. Belgium; Cyprus; France; Germany; Hungary; Norway; Portugal; Romania, Spain; the UK) and outside Europe (e.g. Australia; Brazil; Canada, Iran; South-Africa; Saudi-Arabia; Tanzania; Uganda and the US).

Alan Chalmers (PhD University of Bristol, 1991). He is a Professor of Visualisation at the International Digital Laboratory, WMG, University of Warwick, UK. His research focuses on Real Virtuality, Multi-sensory perception, Visualisation, User studies, High fidelity computer graphics, Parallel processing, and Virtual archaeology. He is Honorary President of Afrigraph and a former Vice President of ACM SIGGRAPH. Together with SpheronVR he was instrumental in the development of the world’s first HDR video camera, which was completed in July 2009.

Extensive professional experience in strategic consultancy and advisory to the government in the areas of public policy, economy, innovation and European funding. Public sector experience includes working as advisor to the Ministers of Economy and Finance, monitoring the main economic and public finances’ policies (2009-2011) and, more recently, as head of cabinet and chief economist at the Ministry of Economy. Representative of the Ministry in the Economic and Social Council (since 2016) and in the Statistical Council (2006-2012 and since 2016). President (2007-2011) of the Tripartite Commission for Monitoring the Evolution of the RMMG (National Minimum Wage), having participated in the Permanent Inter-ministerial Working Group on Minimum Wage (1995-1998).

Helena Roseta has a professional and political career in the areas of housing, urban planning, municipal management, urban sustainability, gender equality and citizenship. She worked with Nuno Portas at LNEC, in the architecture studios of Nuno Teotóno Pereira, Maurício de Vasconcelos Formozinho Sanchez and Luís Jorge Bruno Soares, as well as at the Rectory of NOVA University Lisbon. As independent architect, she produced the Local Agenda for the Environment, an application to the UN Agenda 21. She participated in the Strategic Plan of Guarda and Master Plan of Oliveira do Hospital. As a constituent deputy, she participated in the construction of the current Portuguese Democratic Regime. She has held following positions: Deputy, Mayor of Cascais, President of the Order of Architects. She was councillor for Housing in Lisbon, directed the first Local Housing Program in Portugal and launched the municipal program BIP-ZIP. She was President of the Lisbon Municipal Assembly, and Vice- President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly. Guest speaker on topics like housing, city, participation and citizenship in numerous international and national events. In Parliament, H. Roseta coordinated the Housing Working Group, launched and coordinated the Portuguese Housing Basic Law. She is presently researcher at COCS.NOVA and a board member of FCSH-Nova University. In 2020 she was nominated national coordinator of “Healthy Neighbourhoods” Public Program to empower vulnerable communities for improving their housing and health conditions.

Rosa Valente de Matos is President of the Board of Directors of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central. She has a degree in Sociology, a course in Human Resources Management in Health and a postgraduate degree in Hospital Administration from the National School of Public Health. She also took the National Defence Auditors Course and the Senior Management Programme of Health Institutions, at AESE. She has a career in the health area, having been Secretary of State for Health of the XXI Constitutional Government, President of the Board of Directors of the Regional Health Administration of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, President of Saudaçor, Managing Company of Health Resources and Equipment of the Azores, and of the Board of Directors of the Regional Health Administration of Alentejo.
