Workshop | How Can We Make Social Media Healthier and Safer? Can a European Certification Mark for Social Media Help?

Social media has become one of the most important public spaces in our society. Yet, the rules governing online environments are often less clear than those in the physical world. Discussions about addictive algorithms, misinformation, deepfakes, online hate, and the protection of children and young people highlight the growing need for greater oversight and accountability from social media platforms.
Across Europe, new legislation is being developed to better protect citizens in the digital environment. But is this enough? And would it be possible to independently assess social media platforms before they operate, similar to the way cars or medicines are tested and certified?
In this interactive workshop, we will explore whether an independent European certification mark for social media platforms is feasible. We will discuss the impact of social media on health and well-being, the responsibilities of platform providers, and the existing European regulatory framework.
Participants will then engage in a discussion about which criteria social media platforms should meet and evaluate different platforms using a set of potential certification standards.
